The short-wheelbase version of the highly popular Dodge Grand Caravan has been redesigned just like its longer mate. Calculated together, the Caravan and Grand Caravan still captured a 24 percent share of the minivan market at the end of the 1996 – 2000-model generation. The Caravans, and the closely related Plymouth Voyager, were initially introduced in 1984 as the first “garage-able” front-drive minivans. With the current redesign, the Plymouth badge is gone, so the equivalent to the Dodge Caravan is called the Chrysler Voyager. Chrysler also offers a luxurious Town & Country model.

Dodge made major changes to the outside of the Dakota last year, introducing a four-door Quad Cab body style. The big changes this year are on the inside, where a redesigned dashboard and other components give the interior a new look. When the Dakota Quad Cab arrived in January 2000, the Nissan Frontier was the only other compact pickup to offer crew-cab styling with four conventional, front-hinged doors. Since then, the Chevrolet S-10, GMC Sonoma and Toyota Tacoma added that feature.

Dodge gives its midsize SUV a new dashboard and several new interior features for 2001. Durango is based on the Dakota pickup and straddles two segments of the sport utility market.

DaimlerChrysler redesigned its full crop of four minivans for 2001, including the top-selling, extended-wheelbase Grand Caravan. The two models available include the Sport and upscale ES, each offered with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Dodge also offers a shorter-wheelbase Caravan, while the Chrysler brand includes a short Voyager and a posh, extended-length Town & Country. Initially introduced in 1984 as the first “garage-able” front-drive minivans, Chrysler’s highly popular people-carriers were last redesigned for the 1996 model year.

Dodge's most popular car adds side-impact airbags for the front seats as a new option this year, joining the similar Chrysler Concorde, LHS and 300M in offering that feature.

Racy R/T and ACR models join the lineup, and leather upholstery and side-impact airbags are new options for Dodge's version of the front-drive Neon compact. The Neon was redesigned for the 2000 model year, when it received evolutionary styling changes and larger dimensions.

Dodge shook up the full-size pickup market in 1994 with bold styling on a new Ram that resembled the imposing appearance of a long-haul big rig. Seven years later, the Ram still looks fresh but now has the oldest design among full-size pickups. Ford and General Motors have redesigned their trucks in recent years, and Toyota joined the full-size market last year with the Tundra.

Like its mates from Chevrolet, GMC and Ford, Dodge’s full-size, rear-drive van has been around for a long time — three decades, in fact, though they were upgraded and redesigned for the 1998 model year. The Ram Van is the cargo model, and the Ram Wagon is the passenger-carrying version; the Vans outsell the Wagons by a 5-2 ratio. The truck-based Ram comes in three sizes and three capacity ratings: 1500, 2500 and 3500, and the Ram name also is used for Dodge’s burly-looking full-size pickup trucks.

Dodge drops the Avenger name for its front-drive coupe and introduces a new version called the Stratus. Although the Dodge lineup also features a redesigned Stratus sedan, the coupe is not genetically related.

All-disc antilock brakes are new for 2001 on Dodge’s high-performance, retro-styled RT/10 convertible and GTS coupe. Dodge also has added two new body colors: Sapphire Blue Pearl and Viper Race Yellow, the latter of which is available with black center stripes. A new Comfort Group is available for Viper GTS coupes equipped with the American Club Racer (ACR) option package, which is intended for competitive use on a racecourse. The ACR version is lighter in weight, with a stiffer suspension and lacking some of the usual amenities. As a running change, the RT/10 gets an internal emergency trunk release.
