2001 Models

4Runner

Toyota is adding two new SUVs this year, the full-size Sequoia and the midsize Highlander, so it is restructuring the 4Runner lineup so it doesn't overlap either of the newcomers.

Avalon

Toyota's nearly full-size sedan was restyled and gained more interior room last year, but it stands pat this year. The front-drive Avalon is based on the Toyota Camry, and both are built at Toyota's Georgetown, Ky., plant.

Camry

The Camry, the best-selling car in the United States the last three years, enters its final season in its current form. A redesigned Camry is scheduled to arrive during the 2002 model year.

Camry Solara

The Camry Solara coupe arrived for 1999 as a two-door spin-off of the Camry sedan and was joined in the spring of 2000 by a convertible.

Celica

After undergoing a total redesign for 2000, nothing is new this year for Toyota’s long-lived sport coupe, now in its seventh generation. The Celica name dates back to 1971, making it almost as old as the Corolla sedan. Convertibles have been offered in the past, but today’s Celica is a front-drive hatchback coupe that comes in GT and GT-S trim levels, with two different 1.8-liter four-cylinder engines.

Corolla

Toyota tries to make its front-drive Corolla more appealing to young buyers by giving it a face-lift and a sporty S model. The subcompact Corolla sedan got an early jump on the model year when sales of '01 models started in May 2000.

ECHO

The ECHO arrived last year to replace the Tercel and give Toyota a new low-priced, youth-oriented small car. The ECHO returns unchanged for its sophomore season in two- and four-door sedan body styles that slot below the Corolla in size and price.

Highlander

Toyota hopes to piggyback on the success of the Lexus RX 300, a car-based sport utility vehicle, by offering its own version that is larger but less expensive. The RX 300 is the best-selling model at Lexus, Toyota's luxury division.

Land Cruiser

Toyota's biggest SUV gets an optional navigation system with a DVD player and a JBL sound system as its main additions for 2001. Bigger things are due for 2002, when the Land Cruiser and the similarLexus LX 470 are due for extensive changes.

MR2

Prius

With the Prius, Toyota is the second company to offer a gasoline/electric-hybrid passenger car in the United States. Prius is a four-door, five-passenger sedan that went on sale in late summer, nearly a year after Honda introduced the Insight — a two-seat, two-door hatchback with a similar powertrain. In fact, the Prius was originally projected to be a 2000 model year introduction.

RAV4

Sequoia

After invading one domestic stronghold last year with the Tundra full-size pickup, Toyota aims at another this year with the Sequoia, a full-size sport utility vehicle. Sequoia is built from the same design as the Tundra and at the same Toyota plant in Princeton, Ind.

Sienna

Displaying a modest face-lift for 2001, Toyota’s minivan has gained a more powerful engine and several new features. Appearance changes include a new front fascia, grille and bumpers, as well as redesigned taillights and fresh wheel covers. A backseat video entertainment system with a VCR in a covered unit between the front seats and a lateral skid-control system called Vehicle Skid Control is new for 2001. Side-impact airbags for the front seats are a new option, and the dashboard has been restyled.

Tacoma

Toyota introduces its first pickup with four conventional doors for 2001, the Tacoma Double Cab. The Tacoma is Toyota's compact pickup, and it previously came only in regular-cab and extended-cab (called Xtracab) models with two front doors.

Tundra

The Tundra was introduced for 2000 as the first full-size Japanese pickup, and it carries over for 2001 with minimal change. The Tundra replaced the midsize T100 in Toyota's lineup and challenges the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, Dodge Ram and the GMC Sierra, the full-size domestic pickups.
