Ford Lineup

2005 Models

Buyers in search of a traditional full-size car continue to flock to Ford's rear-wheel-drive Crown Victoria sedan. Among the last of its breed, the Crown Victoria holds a 4.6-liter V-8. Mercury offers a higher-priced version called the Grand Marquis.

Face-lifted for 2005, Ford's smallest sport utility vehicle combines a friendly personality with capable performance and driving ease. A stronger four-cylinder engine has been developed, and the Escape can also be equipped with a V-6. Mazda's similar Tribute is considered to be the Escape's slightly sportier cousin. A new Escape Hybrid with a gasoline/electric powertrain debuts in the 2005 model year.

Ford's full-size, rear-wheel-drive van lost its V-6 base engine for 2004, making a 4.6-liter V-8 standard for E-150 models. A 5.4-liter V-8 is optional. Heavier-duty E-350 Super Duty models can be equipped with a 6.0-liter diesel engine or a 6.8-liter V-10. Cargo vans are available in all three series, but passenger Wagons come only in E-150 and E-350 Super Duty levels.

Thought to be facing extinction, the Excursion continues into 2005. Mammoth dimensions make Ford's largest sport utility vehicle a logical choice only for owners who need space for nine people and their luggage, and don't mind frequent fuel stops. Engine choices include a super-duty Power Stroke diesel V-8.

Related to the Lincoln Navigator and second in size only to the Excursion in Ford's lineup, the full-size Expedition sport utility vehicle carries up to nine people. All models now use a 5.4-liter V-8, which gains 40 horsepower for 2005. Five trim levels, including a new Limited edition, are available.

Ford's league-leading midsize sport utility vehicle gains standard AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control for 2005. Similar to the Mercury Mountaineer, the Explorer comes in four basic flavors, but there are numerous variations within each trim. Explorers may be equipped with rear- or four-wheel drive.

Shoppers who like the cargo-carrying prowess of a pickup truck but prefer a passenger-type vehicle are prospects for the Ford Explorer Sport Trac, which tacks a cargo bed onto the back of a sport utility vehicle. Based on the prior-generation Ford Explorer, the Explorer Sport Trac uses V-6 power and comes in four trim levels.

Ford redesigned its top-selling model for the 2004 model year by giving it a fresh look, stiffer construction and a wider track. Two V-8s are available, and a new V-6 serves as the base engine for 2005. A new King Ranch package for the Lariat SuperCrew is available for 2005.

Ford's three-quarter-ton pickup truck can handle hauling duties that reach beyond the limits of the half-ton F-150. More-powerful engines and freshened styling mark the 2005 F-250 Super Duty.

Ford's one-ton F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks promise heavier-duty hauling limits than the half-ton F-150 and three-quarter-ton F-250 Super Duty. Harley-Davidson and King Ranch editions are available. Freshened styling and more-powerful engines mark the 2005 F-350 Super Duty.

New for 2005, the Five Hundred full-size sedan comes with front- or all-wheel drive. Either a new continuously variable transmission or a six-speed automatic may be installed. Mercury has a related Montego sedan.

Offered as a sedan, hatchback and wagon, the European-themed Focus is Ford's smallest and least-expensive model. Face-lifted for 2005, the Focus now holds a 136-horsepower engine. A larger, 2.3-liter four-cylinder goes into the new ZX4 ST sedan, which borrows some performance suspension components from the departed SVT Focus.

New for 2004, Ford's Freestar minivan replaced the Windstar. A flat-folding third-row seat was installed for the first time in a Ford minivan. The Mercury Monterey is similar.

Ford calls its new 2005 Freestyle a midsize "crossover." Replacing the front-wheel-drive Taurus wagon, the six- or seven-passenger Freestyle promises more SUV-like qualities. It comes with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and a new continuously variable transmission.

Simply put, the Ford GT is an all-American supercar that was created in homage to the GT40 racecars that dominated competition at Le Mans in the mid-1960s. A supercharged, midmounted V-8 produces 550 horsepower, which is roughly equivalent to the output from the original, larger engine that went into competition GT40 cars.

The next-generation Ford Mustang is larger than the current model and features styling cues that hark back to the 1967 version. Two new engines are offered, and occupants get more space than in the previous generation.

Buyers of Ford's compact Ranger pickup truck have plenty of available models from which to choose. The Ranger is available with four-cylinder or V-6 power and in regular-cab or SuperCab (extended-cab) form. Mazda's B-Series Trucks are similar.

Ford's long-lived midsize sedan and wagon got a mild face-lift for 2004 and continue into 2005 with a simplified lineup. Available with a choice of V-6 engines, the front-wheel-drive Taurus competes against the class-leading Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Mercury's Sable is similar.

Ford won't call it "retro," but the company's press material promotes the current Thunderbird's "heritage styling." The T-Bird's overall appearance suggests the original 1955 - 1957 two-seater that became a 1950s icon, but a modern powertrain resides beneath the hood.
